What dumpster rentals involves

Dumpster rental is the right move when you're running a renovation, cleaning out a property over several days, or coordinating a job where a full-service crew isn't the fit. Junk Genius has been handling hauls across the Twin Cities metro for about 15 years, and dumpster rental is a natural extension of that work. We're not a national call center. Mike Reimann's name is on the trucks, MN License #3772090-2 is on file, and when you call (612) 444-5865 you're talking to someone who can actually get you scheduled.

The size of the container you need depends on the scope of the job: a small bathroom gut takes a different box than a full garage clear-out or a roofing tear-off. What drives cost is volume, rental duration, and the type of material you're filling it with. Some materials, like concrete or asphalt, require a separate container and disposal route entirely. If you're not sure what size fits your project, call us and describe the job. We'll tell you straight. Every job is different, contact Junk Genius for an accurate estimate. And if you'd rather skip the rental altogether and have a crew load everything for you, check out our household junk removal service instead.

HOW IT WORKS

Three Steps From Call to Curb

Renting a dumpster shouldn't require a project manager. Here's what the process looks like with Junk Genius.

  1. 01

    Call and Describe the Job

Tell us what you're clearing out, roughly how much material you expect, and when you need the container. We'll recommend the right size and confirm availability, usually same-week.

  2. 02

We Drop It at Your Address

We deliver the dumpster to your driveway, alley, or job site. Fill it at your own pace. We're not standing over your shoulder. It's your timeline.

  3. 03

We Pick It Up When You're Done

Call or text when the container's full or your rental window is up. We haul it away, handle responsible disposal, and you're done. No trips to the transfer station.

WHAT WE ACCEPT

What Goes In the Dumpster: and What Doesn't

Construction Debris

Drywall, lumber, flooring, roofing shingles, and general renovation waste. If you're mid-remodel, this is the container for it. Need help with specific renovation debris removal? We handle that too.

Furniture and Bulk Items

Sofas, beds, dressers, shelving, mattresses, all accepted. Bulky items fill space fast, so be realistic about how much room you're working with when you pick a container size.

Yard and Landscaping Debris

Branches, sod, soil, bagged yard waste, and storm cleanup material. Seasonal jobs in the Twin Cities, spring yard cleanups, fall leaf hauls, are a common fit. See our yard debris removal page for full details.

Carpet and Flooring

Rolled carpet, padding, tile, and laminate are all accepted. Carpet takes up more volume than it looks, so factor that in when sizing your container. We also handle standalone carpet recycling and removal if that's the whole job.

Not Accepted: Hazardous Materials

Paint, motor oil, propane tanks, asbestos, and chemical waste cannot go in the dumpster. These require licensed hazardous waste disposal, and any hauler who tells you otherwise is either uninformed or not being straight with you.

Heavy Material Restrictions

Concrete, brick, and asphalt are heavy enough to require a dedicated container and a separate disposal route. Call us first if your job involves masonry. We'll tell you whether a standard rental or a special setup is the right call.

SIZE GUIDE

Choosing the Right Container Size

Small Cleanout (10-Yard)

One-room cleanout, single bathroom gut, or a partial garage clear. Holds roughly three pickup truck loads. Good for focused, smaller-scope projects.

Mid-Range Project (15-20 Yard)

Multi-room renovation, full garage cleanout, or a deck tear-off. This is the most commonly rented size for residential jobs in the metro. If you're unsure, this is usually the safe bet.

Large Renovation (30-Yard)

Whole-home remodels, roofing projects, or estate cleanouts with years of accumulated material. Covers roughly nine to ten pickup truck loads.

Still Not Sure? Call Us.

Describe your project and we'll recommend a size. We've been doing this for about 15 years across thousands of Twin Cities jobs. We'd rather get you the right box than have you pay for overage fees on a container that ran full on day two.

FULL-SERVICE ALTERNATIVE

Not Sure Dumpster Rental Is the Right Fit?

Dumpster rental makes sense when you're doing the work yourself over a few days and want a container on-site. But it's not always the best option. If you've got a garage packed with decades of stuff and you want it gone in two hours, not two weeks, a full-service attic and garage cleanout crew is the faster call. We load it, we haul it, and we handle the sorting and disposal. Some jobs, like a hoarding cleanout, really do need a trained crew on-site rather than a metal box at the curb. If you describe your job and it's not a rental fit, we'll tell you. We'd rather give you honest advice than put a container in your driveway that doesn't solve the problem.

WHY JUNK GENIUS

What Sets a Local Rental Apart From a National Franchise

Minnesota Licensed, Not a Franchise

MN License #3772090-2. Founded about 15 years ago by Mike Reimann. You're not dealing with a franchisee or a subcontractor chain. You're dealing with the people whose name is on the license.

Responsible Disposal

We donate and recycle as much as we can whenever possible. That includes material from dumpster pickups. We sort on our end so you don't have to.

No Surprise Fees

We tell you what the rental costs before the container hits your driveway. If your load goes over weight, we'll let you know before pickup. Overage fees that appear on the invoice for the first time are not how we operate.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Dumpster Rental Questions, Answered Straight

What is the minimum price for junk removal?
For full-service junk removal, minimum loads (a single item or a small fraction of the truck) typically start at $75-$150 in the Twin Cities metro, depending on the item and how accessible it is. Dumpster rental pricing starts higher but covers multi-day use. Every job is different, contact Junk Genius for an accurate estimate.
What's included in a $99 junk removal service?
A $99 service, if you find one, typically covers only a minimum load, one or two items at most, loaded by the crew, with disposal included. It does not cover a full truck or a multi-item cleanout. Junk Genius gives you a real quote based on actual volume before any work starts. No guessing.
What is the cheapest way to get rid of junk?
Hauling it yourself to a transfer station is technically the cheapest option. If your time is free, you have a truck, and you know where the facility is. Dumpster rental is the next step up. Full-service junk removal costs more per cubic yard but saves you the labor entirely. Most people who compare honestly find the per-hour value of full-service hard to argue with.
How much does 1-800-GOT-JUNK charge to pick up your junk?
1-800-GOT-JUNK is a national franchise, and their pricing is typically volume-based with minimums that run higher than local operators. Independent reviews suggest their full-truck rates are in the $400-$700+ range. Junk Genius is Minnesota-owned and not operating on a franchise fee structure, which is one reason 1,987 customers have rated us 4.9 stars.
How long can I keep the dumpster on my property?
Standard rental periods at Junk Genius are structured by the job scope, not arbitrary day counts. Most residential rentals run 3-7 days. If your project runs long, call us before the window closes and we'll sort it out. We're not running a penalty-fee operation here, just communicate with us.
Can I put construction debris and household junk in the same container?
Generally yes, as long as neither category includes hazardous materials. Mixed loads are common on renovation jobs where you're clearing furniture at the same time as demo debris. The exception is heavy materials like concrete or brick, which go in a separate container due to weight limits. Call ahead and describe the mix. We'll confirm what works.
More questions (4)Fewer questions
Do you need a permit to put a dumpster in the driveway or street?
On private property, like a driveway, most Twin Cities municipalities don't require a permit for a temporary container. Street placement is a different story. Some cities require a right-of-way permit, and some don't allow it at all. We'll flag this during booking based on your address. If you need a permit, you're responsible for pulling it, but we can tell you what to expect.
What materials can't go in a rental dumpster?
Hazardous materials are excluded from every rental container: paint, motor oil, propane tanks, asbestos, and chemical waste all require separate licensed disposal. Concrete, brick, and asphalt need a dedicated heavy-material container due to weight limits. Call us before you book if your project involves any of these. We'll tell you exactly what the setup looks like.
How does dumpster rental differ from full-service junk removal?
With a rental, the container sits on your property and you do the loading on your timeline. Full-service means our crew loads, hauls, and handles disposal in a single visit. Rental fits DIYers and contractors who want flexibility over several days. Full-service fits anyone who wants the job done in hours, not spread across a week.
Do I need a permit to have a dumpster dropped at my house?
For driveway placement on private property, most Twin Cities municipalities don't require a permit. Street placement may require a right-of-way permit, and some cities prohibit it outright. We'll flag the permit question during booking based on your specific address. Permit responsibility falls to the property owner, but we can tell you what to expect in your city.
