What donation drop-off involves

Junk Genius is not a physical donation drop-off center, and we want to be upfront about that. What we are is a full-service donation pickup crew that comes to your home, sorts through your items on-site, and hauls usable goods directly to local Twin Cities charity partners. If you've got furniture, clothing, housewares, or electronics that still have life in them, we handle the logistics so you don't have to load up your car and drive across town. Call (612) 444-5865 to get scheduled, often within the same week.

The process is straightforward. We show up, assess what you've got, and separate donation-eligible items from everything else. We donate and recycle as much as we can whenever possible. What can't be donated gets recycled or disposed of responsibly. Cost depends on volume, how the items are staged, and whether there's furniture or bulky goods involved. Every job is different. Contact Junk Genius for an accurate estimate.

HOW IT WORKS

Three Steps From Clutter to Charity

Getting your usable items out the door and into the hands of someone who needs them takes three straightforward steps with our crew.

  1. 01

    Schedule a Pickup

Call us or submit an estimate request online. We'll confirm your appointment, often same-week. No need to sort anything beforehand or haul boxes to the curb.

  2. 02

    We Sort On-Site

Our crew comes to your location and does the heavy lifting. We evaluate items for donation potential right there, separating what can go to charity from what needs to be recycled or disposed of.

  3. 03

    Items Go Where They Belong

Donation-eligible goods go to our local charity partners. Everything else is recycled or hauled responsibly. You get a cleared space and a clear conscience.

WHAT WE ACCEPT

Items We Sort for Donation

Not everything can be donated, so we tell you straight what qualifies and what doesn't.

Furniture

Sofas, chairs, dressers, and tables in usable condition are strong donation candidates. Heavily stained or structurally broken pieces typically can't be placed. Our furniture removal crew knows the difference on sight.

Clothing and Textiles

Bagged clothing, linens, and towels that are clean and intact can often go directly to charity partners. Wet, moldy, or heavily worn textiles don't qualify, and we won't pretend otherwise.

Housewares and Kitchenware

Dishes, pots, small appliances in working order, and similar items move well through donation channels. Broken or incomplete sets are handled through recycling instead.

Electronics

Working TVs, computers, and tablets can often be donated. Non-working electronics go through our responsible e-waste recycling process rather than a landfill. Printer recycling is also handled.

Books and Media

Boxed books, DVDs, and similar media are frequently accepted by local partners. We check current intake needs before assuming something will be placed.

Children's Items

Toys, games, and gear in safe, working condition are among the most-requested donation categories at local nonprofits. Items with missing parts or safety recalls don't make the cut.

WHY IT MATTERS

The Difference Between Hauling and Actually Giving Back

Plenty of junk removal companies claim they donate. Fewer have the sorting process and the charity relationships to back that up. Junk Genius has been working with Twin Cities nonprofits for about 15 years, and our crews hold certifications in Recycling Management and Waste Management Safety specifically so they can make responsible sorting calls in the field. We donate and recycle as much as we can whenever possible. Mike Reimann built the company around that standard. It's still the standard today. You can read more about us if you want the full story. We won't pretend every item can be saved. But we won't throw something in the landfill just because it's easier, either. That's the honest version of eco-friendly junk removal.

WHO CALLS US

Common Situations We Handle Well

Estate and Inherited Property Cleanouts

Families settling estates often have homes full of usable goods and no time to sort them individually. We handle the full load, pulling out what can go to charity and hauling the rest. House and garage cleanouts are some of our most common full-service calls.

Moving and Downsizing

If you're moving to a smaller space or just finally clearing out decades of accumulation, we'll sort what you don't need and get it to the right place. Faster than three trips to Goodwill.

Spring and Fall Cleanouts

Minnesota winters concentrate a lot of stuff in garages and storage areas. Our crews handle seasonal cleanouts from Linden Hills to Dinkytown, and we sort donation candidates from every load.

Business and Office Transitions

Offices clearing out furniture, equipment, or supplies often have items that local nonprofits can use. Our commercial junk removal service handles the haul and the sorting.

HONEST LIMITS

What We Don't Accept for Donation

We're straightforward about this. Mattresses cannot be donated in Minnesota regardless of condition, but we handle mattress recycling responsibly. Hazardous materials, paint cans, and chemicals are outside our scope entirely. Broken furniture, appliances that don't function, and heavily soiled items won't get placed at a charity partner. We won't load something into a donation truck if a charity will just have to throw it away on the other end. That wastes everyone's time and doesn't help anyone. If you're unsure whether something qualifies, the fastest answer is a phone call to (612) 444-5865. We'll tell you honestly what we can move and what we can't.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to donate to Goodwill or GreenDrop?
It depends on what you have and where it ends up. Goodwill resells items locally and funds job training programs. GreenDrop benefits national nonprofits but hauls items to a central facility. Our donation pickup service works with Twin Cities-based charity partners, so your items stay local. If your priority is community impact, local placement tends to have more direct results than national distribution chains.
Where is the best place to donate clothes in the Twin Cities metro?
Several strong local options operate across the metro: Arc Value Village, Better Futures Minnesota, and various Salvation Army and Goodwill locations. If you'd rather not make multiple trips, our pickup service assesses and sorts your clothing on-site and delivers it to a local partner. That's useful when you have a large volume of items mixed with other household goods.
What items do donation centers not accept?
Most Twin Cities donation centers won't take mattresses, car seats, cribs manufactured before 2011, recalled items, large exercise equipment, hazardous materials, or heavily damaged furniture. Acceptance policies also shift based on current inventory at each location. Our crew sorts with current intake knowledge in mind, so we don't haul items to a partner that will just reject them at the door.
What is the best charity to donate used items to in the Twin Cities?
The right answer depends on the item type and your personal priorities. Furniture goes well to organizations like Better Futures Minnesota, which provides transitional housing support. Clothing and housewares work well through Arc Value Village. Electronics can serve local technology access programs. We maintain relationships with multiple partners so items land where they're actually needed rather than where it's convenient for us.
Do you sort through everything before deciding what gets donated?
Yes. Sorting happens on-site during every pickup. Our crew doesn't dump an entire load at a charity and leave it for them to sort. We evaluate items for condition, cleanliness, and current intake needs before anything gets loaded for donation. What doesn't qualify goes through the appropriate recycling or disposal channel. We donate and recycle as much as we can whenever possible.
Can you handle both a donation drop-off and a junk removal in the same visit?
That's actually the normal job for us. Most pickup calls involve a mix of donation-eligible items and genuine junk that needs disposal. We sort on-site, place what we can with charity partners, and haul the rest responsibly. You don't need to pre-sort or separate anything before we arrive. One call, one crew, one visit covers the whole load.

What happens to items that can't be donated?
Items that don't qualify for donation are either recycled through appropriate channels or hauled to licensed disposal facilities. Electronics go through responsible e-waste recycling. Appliances are handled under our appliance disposal process. Our crews are certified in Recycling Management and Waste Management Safety, so the decision about what goes where is made by people who know the rules, not people guessing.
