What donation pickup involves

If you've got a sofa, dresser, or a garage full of household goods you're ready to let go of, you don't have to haul it anywhere yourself. Junk Genius picks up donation-worthy items directly from your home, sorts what can be reused, and delivers it to a local non-profit partner on your behalf. No scheduling a separate charity truck. No dragging furniture to the curb. One call to (612) 444-5865 and it's handled.

The sorting is where this gets smart. Not everything you own that you no longer want is actually junk. Sofas with life left in them, working appliances, clothing in decent shape. Those things can go to neighbors who need them instead of a landfill. The crew evaluates what you've got, pulls out what charities will accept, and handles the rest through our recycling center and responsible disposal channels. We donate and recycle as much as we can whenever possible. The cost of the service depends on volume, what needs hauling, and how much sorting is involved, but every job is different, so contact Junk Genius - Minneapolis for an accurate estimate.

How It Works

Three Steps From Cluttered to Clear

Donation pickup shouldn't require three phone calls and a borrowed truck. Here's how we keep it simple.

  1. 01

    Call or Book Online

Tell us what you've got and where you are. We'll get you scheduled as early as the same week, often the same day. No commitment until you see the quote.

  2. 02

We Come to You and Sort On-Site

The crew comes inside, moves the items themselves, and separates what goes to charity from what gets recycled or disposed of responsibly. You don't lift a thing.

  3. 03

You Get a Receipt, We Handle the Rest

Where possible, we provide documentation for a tax-deductible donation. Charity items go to local non-profit partners. Everything else gets handled through our responsible hauling process.

What We Pick Up

Items We Commonly Donate or Divert from the Landfill

Sofas and Upholstered Furniture

Couches, loveseats, armchairs, and recliners in decent condition are among the most-requested donation items we handle. If it's clean and structurally sound, there's a good chance it gets donated instead of dumped.

Dressers, Tables, and Bedroom Furniture

Solid wood pieces, bed frames, nightstands, and dining sets often find second homes through our non-profit partners. Flat-pack furniture that's falling apart usually doesn't make the cut, and we'll tell you that upfront.

Appliances

Working refrigerators, washers, dryers, and microwaves can be donated. Non-working units go through our appliance recycling process so the metals and components don't just end up in a hole in the ground.

Household Goods and Clothing

Kitchenware, books, tools, and bagged clothing can all go to local partners if they're in acceptable condition. We take the whole load and sort it. You don't need to pre-sort before we arrive.

Exercise Equipment

Treadmills, weight sets, and stationary bikes come up often in cleanouts. Working equipment usually has a home somewhere. Non-working equipment gets recycled or disposed of through our standard process.

Electronics

Older TVs, computers, and peripherals rarely get accepted by charities, but they shouldn't go in the trash either. We route e-waste through proper channels so it doesn't create a disposal problem for someone else down the line.

Fast Facts

What to Know Before You Call

Charities Set the Rules on What They Accept

We can't guarantee every item gets donated. That depends on condition and what local partners are currently accepting. We're upfront about this before we haul anything. If something can't be donated, it goes to recycling or responsible disposal, not just a landfill.

Tax-Deductible Receipts Where Applicable

When items go to qualifying non-profits, we do our best to provide documentation you can use for a tax deduction. Keep that in mind if you're clearing out a lot of usable goods. It can offset part of the cost of the service.

We Come Inside: You Don't Move Anything First

Don't pull the sofa to the curb before we get there. We bring it out ourselves. That's part of the service, and it's one of the reasons people call us instead of arranging a charity pickup on their own.

The Full Load Is Covered in One Trip

Donatable items, recyclables, and genuine junk all go in the same job. If you're doing an attic or garage cleanout and some things are worth donating while others aren't, we handle the whole pile in a single appointment.

Why It Matters

Donation & recycling

That number isn't a marketing claim. It's what happens when you actually sort before you dump. Most junk removal trucks don't bother. Sorting slows things down, and most companies aren't set up for it. We've built relationships with local non-profit partners specifically because we think the sorting is worth doing. A sofa that works fine should go to a family that needs it. An old TV should go to an e-waste processor, not a landfill. We won't promise every item finds a new home, but we will promise we look before we throw. Our crews hold Recycling Management certifications and operate under MN License #3772090-2, so responsible handling isn't optional on our jobs. It's standard. Across 1,987 Google reviews, customers mention the care and efficiency of the crew as much as anything else. That's the reputation we're protecting every time a truck goes out.

Who Calls Us for This

Common Situations That Lead to a Donation Pickup

Home Cleanouts and Downsizing

Moving out of a larger home and keeping only what fits the new one. A lot of good furniture ends up in these situations that deserves to be donated rather than thrown out.

Estate and Inherited Property Cleanouts

Sorting through a parent's or relative's home after they've passed is hard enough. We handle the physical work and try to get as much donated as possible, which can feel like the right way to honor what they owned.

Garage and Basement Overhaul

Decades of accumulation in a garage cleanout often turns up items in perfectly good condition buried under actual junk. We sort it all and route each piece appropriately.

Upgrading Furniture or Appliances

New couch arriving Thursday? Call us before the delivery. We'll pull the old one out, assess whether it's worth donating, and clear the space before the new piece arrives.

Common Questions

Donation Pickup: Frequently Asked Questions

Who will pick up donation items for free in the Twin Cities metro?
Several local non-profits, including St. Vincent de Paul and Habitat for Humanity ReStore, do offer their own pickup programs, but scheduling through them directly can take weeks and they have strict item requirements. Junk Genius works with non-profit partners and handles pickup as part of a full-service haul, which means you get faster scheduling and we take mixed loads, not just the items that meet a charity's exact specs.
Does Goodwill offer furniture donation pickup?
Goodwill in the Twin Cities doesn't offer home pickup for most furniture. You'd need to bring items to a drop-off location yourself, and they don't accept all furniture types. If you've got a sofa, dresser, or household goods you can't transport on your own, a donation pickup service through Junk Genius gets the job done without you needing a truck or a second pair of hands.
Does the Salvation Army do free donation pickup?
The Salvation Army does offer pickup in some markets, but availability in the Twin Cities metro depends on your location and scheduling window, and wait times can run several weeks. If your timeline is tighter or you've got a mixed load of donatable items and actual junk, calling Junk Genius handles everything in one appointment rather than splitting it between two separate pickups.
Will charities collect furniture directly from my home?
Some will, with conditions. Most local charities only pick up items that meet their current needs, which changes week to week. They also typically won't help move items from inside the home, you'd need to get furniture to the door or curb yourself. Junk Genius goes inside, carries items out, and hauls everything regardless of whether it ends up donated or recycled.
Can you pick up a sofa that's on the second floor or in a basement?
Yes. Tight stairwells, low ceilings, heavy sectionals, the crew handles it. Let us know about any access challenges when you call so we can plan accordingly. We've removed furniture from finished basements, third-floor walk-ups, and more than a few situations that required some creative maneuvering. It's part of the job.
What happens to furniture that can't be donated?
If an item doesn't meet the condition requirements for any of our non-profit partners, it doesn't automatically go to a landfill. Upholstered furniture can go to textile recyclers. Metal components get routed through our metal recycling process. We try to divert as much as possible from landfill disposal across the full load, donated or not.
More questions (2)Fewer questions
Do I need to sort my items before the crew arrives?
No. Bring us the whole pile and we'll sort on-site. We understand what local charity partners are currently accepting and what condition requirements they have. Pre-sorting can actually cause problems if you donate the wrong thing or pitch something a charity would've taken. Let the crew assess it. That's what you're paying for.
Will I get a tax-deductible receipt for donated items?
Where items are delivered to qualifying 501(c)(3) non-profit partners, we do our best to provide documentation that supports a deduction. The IRS requires you to value the items yourself for deduction purposes. We can provide the donation record, but the valuation is on your end. Keep this in mind when you're clearing a lot of usable household goods at once.
